Ambassador Features: National Osteopathic Medicine Week

What is a DO?

A Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine focuses on the whole body approach to treat and care for patients.

Today, there are more than 151,000 osteopathic physicians and medical studentes improving the lives of patients through their distinctive whole person approach to care.

To celebrate National Osteopathic Medicine Week, we asked four osteopathic physicians which tenet of Osteopathy resonates with them the most and why.

The 4 Principles of Osteopathy:

  1. The body is a unit; the person is a unit of body, mind, and spirit.
  2. The body is capable of self-regulation, self-healing, and health maintenance.
  3. Structure and function are reciprocally interrelated.
  4. Rational treatment is based upon an understanding of the basic principles of body unity, self-regulation, and the interrelationship of structure and function.

Monica Kieu, DO

For Dr. Monica Kieu, medicine is not just her profession, it’s who she is. As a Facial Plastic Surgeon, Dr. Kieu understands how important the face is and believes it represents emotion, health, and youthfulness. Dr. Kieu feels a sense of accomplishment knowing she is helping her patients put their best face forward.

Which of the 4 tenets of Osteopathy resonates with you the most? Why?

The osteopathic principle that resonates most with me is the third one: that structure and function are interrelated.

As a facial plastic surgeon I’m acutely aware of this relationship; for example, when performing rhinoplasty I have to be mindful that the cosmetic changes I make to the form can greatly alter nasal function.

Not only is this true for the natural world but also art and architecture, so this tenet has many far-reaching applications.

Danielle Ward, DO

Dr. Danielle Ward chose to become a physician because of her love for medicine and helping others. For Dr. Ward, her biggest inspiration is her daughter. As a single mother, her daughter motivates her to overcome obstacles and lead by example by showing her it is possible to accomplish your goals with hard work, dedication, and perseverance.

Which of the 4 tenets of Osteopathy resonates with you the most? Why?

The tenet of osteopathic medicine that resonates with me the most is that rational treatment is based upon an understanding of the basic principles of body unity, self-regulation, and the interrelationship of structure and function.

This resonates with me because as a physician it is important to recognize that no two patients are the same, and providing the best care means  having detailed knowledge of the human mind, body, and spirit as a whole. It encourages me to stay on top of the latest advancements and always consistently strive to provide the best care for my patients.

Shinban Liu, DO

For Dr. Shinban Liu, surgery was an opportunity for him to help patients and impact their lives in an immediate and meaningful way. Dr. Liu always wanted a career where he could connect with people and provide help in times of need. By becoming a surgeon, he was able to fulfill both desires and have a literal “hands-on” approach to solving patient’s problems.

Which of the 4 tenets of Osteopathy resonates with you the most? Why?

Healing happens when the whole patient is treated. This is why my favorite principle of osteopathic medicine is the concept that “The body is a unit; the person is a unit of body, mind, and spirit.”

Alanna Fostyk, DO

Initially wanting to go into pediatrics, once Dr. Alanna Fostyk rotated in plastic surgery, she never looked back. With her father also being an osteopathic physician in plastic surgery, Dr. Fostyk knew this field of medicine was in her blood. Navigating as a female in a male dominated field comes with many challenges but she believes if you follow your dreams, work hard, and perservere, it will be worth it in the end to be able to do what you love.

Which of the 4 tenets of Osteopathy resonates with you the most? Why?

Becoming an osteopathic physician was ingrained in me since I was little since my dad is an osteopathic physician and all of my physicians growing up were.  I saw their compassion and love of their career and for their patients.  Osteopathic medicine has come a long way, initially dedicated to preventive care and the proposition that the body can heal itself.  One of the 4 pillars that resonates with me the most now, as a plastic & reconstructive surgeon, is that the body is a unit - the person is a unit of body, mind, and spirit.  Oftentimes, people mistake plastic surgery as vain.  Whether it is reconstruction for breast cancer or skin cancer, breast reduction for back pain,  or an abdominoplasty and liposuction after having multiple pregnancies, plastic surgery makes the patient feel better about themselves, which in turn makes them happier.  I help boost patient's self confidence through their body which increases their self-esteem and increases their emotional well being.
