Dominique Blume is a second year PA student in Pittsburgh, PA currently going through her clinical rotations. She graduated with a Bachelor of Science from the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, IN where she was premed, but also studied the humanities. She went on to become a medical assistant in an OBGYN private practice and an internal medicine practice for a year and a half prior to starting PA school.
In her own words,
"I would not see this as a failure now, but it took me applying three times to get into PA school. The first two times, I rushed the application and did not yet have enough patient care experience that is so vital prior to starting PA school. Therefore, I spent an unexpected year and a half as a medical assistant and did not go to PA school straight after graduating college.
I could not be more grateful for the lessons, the patient encounters, and the professional relationships that I made during that time. Those lessons have stayed with me through PA school and I entered didactic year more prepared than I would have ever been without the 1400 hours of patient care experience I had gained. Plus, I did not apply to the program I am in now during my first two application cycles and I really believe I was meant to start this path the way I did."
