This Wednesday marks the 195th birthday of Elizabeth Blackwell, a courageous women who paved the path for females in healthcare. To honor Blackwell and her legacy, Hala Sabry DO, Medelita H.I.P. Ambassador and founder of Physician Mother Group (PMG), has declared February 3rd as the first official National Women Physician day.
According to the 2014 Census of Actively Licensed Physicians in the United States, only 32% of all physicians are female. The field of medicine has come a long way in gender equality in recent years, but it is still not exactly welcoming for women. Women physicians are often subject to prejudice, sexism, and unspoken expectations that their male counterparts will never experience.
"We have a responsibility to protect and nurture the practice of medicine, and this starts by reshaping the way society treats the woman physician," says Sabry. By establishing a National Women Physician Day to celebrate and honor women in this field, we are one step closer to empowering women around the world to pursue careers in medicine without fear of gender norms.
In Sabry's words, "Together we are creating a collective voice that has the power to bring about positive changes for physicians and patients alike."
