Name: Alanna Fostyk, DO
Title: Plastic & Reconstructive Surgeon
School/Program: Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine
Currently Wearing: The Merit P. Slim Fit Lab Coat
Why did you choose your profession?:
I initially wanted to go into pediatrics and rotated through and did not like it. My time went the quickest as a medical student on surgery. Into my fourth year of medical school, I had no idea what I wanted to do. My dad, who is a plastic surgeon, said, "why don't you rotate with me?" I rotated with him and knew - it was in my blood and I was meant to be a plastic surgeon. Currently, we practice together.
Current Passion Project:
I do surgical missions trips annually with Healing the Children Northeast.
Who was/is your inspiration?
My father - my role model.
Fun Fact 1:
I played piano and saxophone growing up.
Fun Fact 2:
My husband & I met in medical school and he is also a physician.
Do you have any advice for others interested in entering your field?
Any surgical specialty, as a female, is difficult for many reasons. The hours, having a family, being in a male-dominated profession. My advice is follow your dreams, work hard and persevere - it's all worth it in the end to do something you love.
