Why did you choose your profession?:
I always knew that I loved medicine. I come from a family of physicians. As a child, I dreamt of becoming of veterinarian, but in high school, I starting volunteering at the hospital. I loved the excitement, sights, sounds, and pace of the hospital. I remember getting such a rush from delivering blood from the blood bank and knowing that I was making an impact on someone's life — even in a small way. From there, I set my sights on nursing school, knowing that I ultimately wanted to pursue my master's degree as a nurse practitioner. I was intrigued by the work life balance, but I was most touched by the compassionate, thorough, and attentive qualities of nurse practitioners.
Current Passion Project:
In my current role as a general and bariatric surgery nurse practitioner at Saint Joseph's Health, I enjoy counseling patients on the benefits of surgical weight loss. Obesity is a serious problem affecting approximately one in three Americans. Weight plays such a huge role in our overall health — how we look, feel, and move in our skin. Medical and surgical weight loss can have a profound effect on comorbid conditions, such as hypertension, diabetes, and even musculoskeletal disease.
Who was/is your inspiration?
My family, friends, colleagues, mentors, and patients have all taught me invaluable lessons.
Fun Fact 1:
I started PartialtoPink.com, a style blog, after NP school. My blog provides affordable workplace style inspiration. It has grown much to my amazement!
Fun Fact 2:
I played ice hockey until I was in high school. I have a mean wrist shot! I also enjoy skiing and dancing.
Do you have any advice for others interested in entering your field?
Shadow a medical professional or volunteer at your local hospital. I've also worked with numerous medical scribes during my career in the Emergency Department, many of whom have gone on to become some of the best and most successful physicians, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants! It's an amazing opportunity to immerse yourself in the medical world.
