Robert Drummond, MD, PhD

Name: Robert Drummond, MD, PhD

Title: Physician

Location: CA

School/Program: The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine

Currently Wearing: The Osler Slim Fit Lab Coat

Why did you choose your profession?:
For me, the call to medicine is personal. I discovered that I was born with Sickle Cell Trait when I was 10 years old, and that was when I decided that I wanted to be a doctor. I later became aware of the Medical Scientist Training Program, where one earns both an MD and a PhD. The combination of both provides an unparalleled level of training in medicine and science.

Current Passion Project:
Sickle Cell Disease affects 1/15 African Americans in the country, myself included. This remains a source of passion for me. I am particularly interested in advising, supporting, and mentoring the next generation of physicians and physician scientists.

Who was/is your inspiration?
My mother was an A student a member of the National Honor Society, but for numerous reasons never attended college. After a long career working for a hospital, she was unceremoniously let go from her job. Me becoming a physician has allowed me to take care of her for the rest of her life. That is my major source of inspiration!

Fun Fact 1:
I was a State Champion and All American wrestler in High School, but I turned down athletic scholarships and chose to attend school on an academic scholarship instead.

Fun Fact 2:
I love snakes, and currently own 3, including Drogon, my Burmese Python that will likely reach lengths of 20 ft or more.

Do you have any advice for others interested in entering your field?
Work Hard, Focus, ignore the negative advice, listen to the positive advice, don’t accept no for an answer, and find a mentor. The path to medical school is easy with the right guidance.
