Name: Roohi Jeelani, MD
Title: Reproductive endocrinology and Infertility Physician
Location: Hoffman Estates, IL
School/Program: Wayne State University
Currently Wearing: The Vera G. Slim Fit Lab Coat
Why did you choose your profession?:
When I was 12yo I had my first encounter with a fertility doctor. My mom had taken me to her because I was being shuffled from doctor to doctor for having irregular cycles. When I walked in, I saw a bunch of “inappropriate” pictures... you know stuff that we don’t really talk about, like how babies are born and Vaginas! So I mustered up the courage to ask her what she “really” does, and with the sweetest smile on her face she said... I help make babies. The rest was history, I knew I was going to grow up and help make babies just like her.
Current Passion Project:
Yes yes and yes! Having been a fertility patient myself, I heavily promote infertility awareness week. I previously had an NIH grant which worked on breast and ovarian cancer and infertility, I use October and November to campaign about that. Basically all things female, fertility and empowerment through knowledge.
Who was/is your inspiration?
My very own fertility doctor was my true inspiration. She was not only one of the first fertility doctors in the country but was a female in a male dominated field! Of course my very daily inspiration is my mom, single Asian moms are rare, but to be bold enough to raise three kids and work multiple odd jobs to do so is huge! My very own hero!
Fun Fact 1:
I used to be a model, have won Miss India Midwest and International. I have modeled runway and prong for companies like Ralph Lauren and Swarovski.
Fun Fact 2:
I secretly love bad food! McDonald’s any day can cheer me up!
Do you have any advice for others interested in entering your field?
Yes, keep your eye on the prize. The road is long, there will be a million nay sayers... but guess what you got this! And research, research... and more research!
