Why did you choose your profession?:
I felt drawn to this field because, as a pathologist, you really are “the Doctor’s Doctor. Every other physician relies on your report, your findings, and your clinicopathologic judgement to treat their patients. Pathologists give a definitive diagnosis that dictates treatment and management--it's a very rewarding specialty! Pathologists play many roles— they diagnose at the microscope, run the laboratory, manage blood products and transfusion medicine services, and they’re at the cutting edge of molecular and cytogenetic diagnostics, which is fascinating! I love my specialty because I evaluate and diagnose every tissue in the body and have the privilege of serving as a consultant for other doctors.

Current Passion Project:
I started a small business and website called LibraMed, LLC, which helps health care professionals reach their goals in medicine while still prioritizing their mental and emotional health. I have a personal statement editing service, a blog, and and ask anything section which works like an advice column. I’m a firm believer that long-term success in medicine is based on a balance between personal and professional pursuits, and I hope LibraMed helps others achieve happiness and success in every facet of their life!

Who was/is your inspiration?
My parents have always been my greatest inspiration! They are physicians and they moved to this country with almost no money, and had to re-complete their residency training to practice in the United States. We grew up with very meager beginnings, but I never felt like I wanted for anything because of how much love my parents poured into my and my siblings’ childhood. They taught us the value of hard work, sacrifice, and compassion for others. Their love and support made me who I am today!

Fun Fact 1:
I speak four languages! English, Urdu, Hindi, and Spanish. The next language I’m hoping to learn is French.

Fun Fact 2:
I love writing, and frequently write poetry and short stories. My dream is to one day write a novel.

Do you have any advice for others interested in entering your field?
If you have never thought about pathology, give it a chance! It’s a specialty for curious and creative minds, and it has a marvelous work-life balance. Shadow a pathologist or pathology PA, consider doing an elective rotation in path, or reach out to a pathology mentor to get more information on how to be involved in the specialty. There are tons of resources and we are a very welcoming specialty!
