Name: Marta Perez, MD
Title: Obstetrics & Gynecology Physician
Location: Atlantic Beach, FL
School/Program: Vanderbilt University School of Medicine
Currently Wearing: The Merit P. Slim Fit Lab Coat
Why did you choose your profession?:
I chose to become an OB-GYN because of the unique opportunities to care for women throughout their life time. I see wellness visits and perform surgery. I can be a part of the joyous moment of birth and comfort a family through a miscarriage. I see young girls and older women. I love helping women understand and love their bodies.
Current Passion Project:
I serve on the board of @renewingdignity, a nonprofit aimed at eliminating menstrual inequality in my community - something I feel very passionate about! This organization has already made a huge impact in Northeast Florida and we have big plans for the future.
Who was/is your inspiration?
My parents are a model of live and hard work, they have challenged and supported me my whole life. I am continually inspired by my grandmother, who emigrated from Cuba, leaving everything behind as a mom of 6 and getting her second PhD in the U.S.
Fun Fact 1:
I worked as an ocean lifeguard for 4 summers, keeping the ocean safe!
Fun Fact 2:
I was a breech vaginal delivery when I was born! That is a rarity and I think it means I was meant to be an OB-GYN.
Do you have any advice for others interested in entering your field?
My favorite phrase is "trust women." Women's health is often marginalized and their experiences can be brushed off, but really listening to and validating women can lead to a deep therapeutic relationship.
